What inspired you to start your fitness journey? It all started in 2007. I was modeling a lot at the time and Pilates kept me in good shape. I started more for the physical aspect of it, but in 2013 my purpose in fitness became so much more. I was going through a divorce, I took over a failing Pilates studio, and I was not in a good place mentally. I started all over, and fitness and wellness became something I really needed for my mental health and just not my physical health. Being someone who has struggled with anxiety, depression, and addiction; I don’t think I would have overcome what I went through at that point in my life without the foundation my new career in health and wellness gave me. That’s when Carrie’s Pilates was born.
What challenges did you face at the beginning and how did you overcome them? I’m not your typical fitness instructor. I’m not waking up every day at some ungodly hour to work out. I don’t particularly love green juices and veggies. I’m not super strict or crazy disciplined with what I eat or what I do. I’m just a girl who’s trying her best to motivate and help others. I think maybe feeling like I don’t fit in the typical box a fitness model/ trainer/ influencer fits in was one of my biggest challenges. I had to learn that it’s OK to be my authentic self and that people that came to my studio and took my classes might like me for my bubbly personality, high energy, and kindness. And that it was OK I didn’t have a 6 pack and wasn’t a no-nonsense bootcamp style trainer.
How has fitness transformed your mental and emotional well-being? It’s given me a lot of purpose. A lot of good endorphins. And it’s something I just crave when I fall out of my normal routine. I’m a lot happier.
How do you stay motivated to keep pushing yourself further? I want to make myself proud! I want to be strong for my family and to inspire as many people as I can. Taking a group fitness class at one of my studios or working out with a partner keeps me motivated for sure.
How has your perception of fitness and health changed over the years? I have the mindset now t hat working out is something I “get to do”, and not something “I have to do”. I’m blessed to get to move my body and do the things I can. Wellness has become a lifestyle.
Can you share a moment when you felt most proud of your fitness accomplishments? Honestly being interviewed for your magazine and on the cover is a major goal. As far as accomplishments, I feel most proud hearing from my students and clients that my studios and teachings have made an impact on them. I love building others up.
What are your go-to sources of protein in your diet? Great question. Protein is so important! I really love plant-based protein shakes. OWYN, Orgain, and Koia are all in my fridge/ pantry.
What role do healthy fats play in your meal plan? I really love avocados which are great for heart health and weight management.
How do you ensure you’re getting enough micronutrients, like vitamins and minerals in your diet? I take a multivitamin daily, fish oil, and a collagen supplement. There is so much research you can do online (just consider the source it’s coming from) where you can find out what’s right for you.
How do you balance micronutrients (carbs, proteins, and fats) for optimal performance? I try to eat as balanced as possible. I probably focus on making sure I consume enough protein the most! I do have my cheat days though.
Do you follow any specific eating style or diet? I try to commit to a 12-hour break between dinner and breakfast.
What is your favorite pre and post-workout meal or snack? A good plant-based protein smoothie.
How important is hydration and how do you make sure you’re drinking enough water? Every morning when I wake up it’s 2 glasses of water first before coffee or anything else. I carry around a water bottle with me and refill it all throughout the day. I make sure to double up on water if I have caffeine or alcohol as well! If I’m not hydrated, I’m likely to feel sluggish and lose my energy, plus it shows in my skin. So I am big on my water intake.
Do you allow for cheat meals or snacks, and how do you balance them with your regular eating habits? Yes, absolutely! I am one of those people who can’t deny themselves of anything. If I tell myself I can’t have something I’ll just want it more. It’s all about moderation.
What’s one food you couldn’t live without in your healthy eating plan? Definitely my plant-b ased protein shakes.
What advice would you give to women who are just starting their fitness journey? That you can start anywhere. Just do the best you can. If all you have time to start with is a walk once a day, start with that walk. Working out with a friend is a great way to stay committed and motivated. Group fitness classes are fun and it’s amazing what can be packed into a 45-minute workout! I’d love to welcome anyone just starting out to Carrie’s, we also offer private sessions, which is a great way to start out one on one with your instructor and focus on your personal goals.
