What inspired you to start your fitness journey? I started because I was not comfortable in my body, and I have a history of eating disorders. I was in a really bad place and used one of the only things I could control…that was food. I ended up in the ER several times and was passing out in restaurants. My teeth started to get loose. The doctors told me I was slowly killing myself. I didn’t care until I got pregnant. It was either him or me and I instantly switched gears and have never looked back. He saved my life.
What challenges did you face at the beginning, and how did you overcome them? The challenging part was the uncertainty of the process. Starting something completely foreign to me was scary and exciting at the same time. I just made a mindset shift and decided I wasn’t going to stop until I reached my goal.
How has fitness transformed your mental and emotional well-being? Realizing that all three components are tied so closely together, it is impossible to have one without the other. I am mentally and emotionally as strong as I ever have been. Always room for more growth.
How has your perception of fitness and health changed over the years? Before I became a mom, I was only training for aesthetics. Afterward, I realized the importance of training from the inside out. This is the first thing I tell any potential new client no matter what stage of life they are in.
Can you share a moment where you felt most proud of your fitness accomplishments Personally, it was when I competed in my first bodybuilding competition in 2013. Professionally, in 2018 I had a client who was scheduled to go in for spinal surgery. He couldn’t stand up straight and was on high doses of pain medications. I told him to trust me. 6 weeks later, he went back for his final MRI before his scheduled surgery and his surgeon said he no longer needed to have it. His discs had shifted and I had him tapering off pain medications. We worked for 8 months before he even picked up a weight. He is still currently my client to date.
What are your go-to sources of protein in your diet? Eggs and egg whites, salmon, chicken, ground turkey, ground bison.
What role do healthy fats play in your meal plan? Healthy fats play a huge role and they are a part of most of my meals. Currently, I am eating almond butter, avocados, and olive oil in my meals on a daily basis.
How do you ensure you’re getting enough micronutrients, like vitamins and minerals, in your diet? I have a functional health coach who has been a game changer for me, Sammy Houle! She has truly guided me to a place I never imagined my body could go. Talk about unleashing my
potential.
How do you balance macronutrients (carbs, protein, and fats) for optimal performance? I have a meal plan that I follow to a T! If you don’t have a functional coach with nutritional background. I highly recommend everyone getting one.
Do you follow any specific eating style or diet (e.g., intermittent fasting, keto, plant-based)? At this time, I am in a growing phase. I eat my meals every 2-3 hours. 5 meals a day.
What is your favorite pre- and post-workout meal or snack? Pre-workout I eat gluten free oats, pumpkin puree, and blueberries. I make them into pancakes and they are super yummy. Post-workout I have a protein shake with mixed berries and 2 rice cakes with almond butter.
How important is hydration, and how do you make sure you’re drinking enough water? Hydration is often overlooked and is essential for the body to recover. I drink at least 2 liters, and as high as a gallon a day with added electrolytes.
Do you allow for cheat meals or snacks, and how do you balance them with your regular eating habits? Yes! Another key in the process. Its a necessary tool for the mental break. I have pre-approved meals. I plan ahead and enjoy. My favorite TREAT meals are steak and potatoes or sushi. And yes, I also get to have dessert.
What’s the one food you couldn’t live without in your healthy eating plan? Salmon. The staff loves it when I stink up the office in the gym.
What advice would you give to women who are just starting their fitness journey? Don’t be afraid.
